Why Do We Do It?The Foxhole tradition was started by a group who were patrons of the Winterhawk, and then the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival back when it was hosted on the Rothvoss Farm in Ancramdale, NY. For several weeks preceding the festival, folks would gather in the lower field in order to secure a prime piece of real estate for the festival on the hill. Over the years the "liners" got to know one another and eventually the line for Grey Fox became an event of it's own. In 2008 Grey Fox relocated to the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill NY and lining up was no longer an option. Not willing to give up the very special pre-fest party, certain individuals decided to organize an event separate from Grey Fox to celebrate the very special friendships and "lollygagging" they had grown to love as much as the festival itself. Location Location LocationThe Foxhole is located on the Allan Farm on Allen Teater Road in Preston Hollow, NY. It is a 50 acre working hay field that sits about 1500ft in elevation overlooking the Catskill region. The views from the field are extraordinary - almost 360 degrees of breathtaking scenery. Our host, Elsie Allan, is a wonderful woman, who, with her husband Jim, welcome bluegrass enthusiasts to their spectacular property. The farm is located approximately 4 miles from the Grey Fox site. Pickin' PartyOne of the main activities for foxholers is picking bluegrass music day and night. Some of the finest acoustic musicians in the Northeast can be found amongst the crowd. Of course many of the people that attend are simply those that appreciate the music, the camaraderie and the beauty of the area. Besides the music, the Foxhole has an outdoor "under the stars theater" for children and adults, several special events, and the fabulous "Gumbo Night" which is the grand finale to the event. While it is "rough camping" (no electricity) there is recycling, port-o-lets, a water truck, handwashing stations and ice available on-site. We hope you can join us for this very special summer event each July in Preston Hollow, NY!
